HFS (Hierarchical File System) is a File System with information organized in a tree-like structure of directories. Each directory can contain files or other directories.

zFS. (zSeries File System). A type of file system that resides in a Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM), linear, data set. The data and interfaces are compliant with the distributed file system (DFS), which is part of the distributed computing environment (DCE). DCE is defined by the Open Software Foundation (OSF).

HFS and zFS are both used with Unix System Services. HFS files can be defined through JCL whereas zFS files require IDCAMS definition. HFS has been functionally stabilized and will eventually go away; zFS is IBM'S preferred file system for Unix System Services files. zFS files need to be initialized before use whereas HFS files are ready to go once defined. zFS files have a Unix program zfsadmn to somewhat manage them.

Anuj: from the Unix standpoint there's no difference in HFS and zFS as far as mounting directories, the hierarchical structure, and accessing files or directories. The differences are physical structure, primarily.

Both HFS and zFS files have to be mounted in Unix System Services; this can be automated or manually done.
