Who has time for games? Remember everything thing you do on the main frame can and may be recorded and monitored! |

| We do not have time for games; yet we have time for 'gaming'. I do not recall where I read it, but I recall that some of the online games with massive numbers of users were hosted by z systems. |

from the replies i think there are no/very few games in mainframes. So why don't you try creating one and let us know. |

25 to 30 years ago, I remember two games on the mainframe. They were of a text variety (nothing like today's XBOX or PS3).
The 1st one was STAR TREK that I believe was developed at some university. You had a grid made up of quadrants and sectors. You would indicate what quadrant and sector to go to. You had a specific amount of engine fuel, phaser power, 10 photon torpedoes, life power, short and long range sensore, etc. Every quadrant or sector you visit may or may not have romulians/klingons to defeat. Certain sectors you visited had planets where you could recharge all your powers (fuel, photons, etc.)
One time I fired 10 photon torpedoes off into space (not aiming at anything specific) and the program comes back with:
Bones: I'm ordering an immediate psychological profile of the captain.
The 2nd text game was a spelunking game. You went deep into a labyrinth of caves collecting treasures or equipment along the way.
You had a lamp, but after it runs low on fuel, it goes out leaving you in the dark, and the game was over.
I'm curious if anyone has seen either of these two games over the years. |

Hello,
The "spelunking game" was known as "Colossal Cave" or "Adventure". The first rendition was just a cave trip (iirc, Mammoth Cave in TN). Then "stuff" was added to earn points and overcome certain obstacles.
Both this and the Star Trek game were completely text-in text-out. Another drawback of the early games (and there were many more) was that the only way to play was to sit at the system console (there was no tso or cics). Even if someone drew primitave graphics, they didn't work so well on the console typewriter. If i turned my memory loose (scary thought) i'd think of some more, but i do remember some number games, a verson of hangman, tic-tac-toe, and a few other "adventure"-type games (a murder mystery, a haunted house, a jungle). |

I remember trek, never saw the cave one...
A PSR friend wrote a 3-D tic-tac-toe and I wrote a 'mastermind' and a forest-fire fighting simulation... All were CICS based..... |
