What is the use of specifying PARM=' VSAMEMY=YES ' in the executable statement of the jcl when sorting is used

The parameter is actually VSAMEMT or VSAMEMT=YES, not VSAMEMY=YES. Here's the description from "z/OS DFSORT Application Programming Guide" which you can access from:

www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/software/sort/mvs/srtmpub.html

VSAMEMT specifies that DFSORT accepts an empty VSAM input data set and processes it as having zero records.

NVSAMEMT specifies that DFSORT terminates if an empty VSAM input data set is found.
