hi all

i want to know how to calculate the full space occupied. pl consider this parameters
primary allocation =2
secondary allocation =3
dir block =6
how the extents will be allocated. pl tell me the full deatils of space allocation.how many tracks forms a cylinder and cylinder makes block. thank u

Hi Sunish,

your query
-------------
i want to know how to calculate the full space occupied. pl consider this parameters
primary allocation =2
secondary allocation =3
dir block =6
how the extents will be allocated. pl tell me the full deatils of space allocation.how many tracks forms a cylinder and cylinder makes block. thank u

Possible Solution
--------------------
For Secondary Allocation in SPACE parameter 15 extents are possible for TRKS,BLKS.(Note: not for cylinders)

Example 1
------------
Primary=2
Secondary=3
Directory=6
Code:

SPACE=(TRK,(2,3,6))

Will give initially 2 trks as primary quantity and 3*15=45 trks(15 extents are possible for trks,blks) as secondary qty . so a total of 47 trks Can be used.After that the JCL abends.

here the directory =6 is useful to store information regarding all the member name, locations.

Example2
-----------
Primary=2
Secondary=3
Directory=6
Code:

SPACE=(CYL,(2,3,6))

Initally 2 cylinders are allocated as primary ...and a maximum of 3 CYL can be used as extends.here (15 extends not possible for CYLS)

here the directory =6 is useful to store information regarding all the member name, locations.

Standards
-----------
On a normal 3390 disk...one track can hold a maximum of 56664 bytes of data.

The size of a data set is limited to 65,536 tracks per volume
except for VSAM.

To Calculate the Space required
--------------------------------------
In TSO type SPC to see a demo calculation for calculating the exact blks,trks,cyls required

Plz let me know in case of any concerns.

Hi prasanth,

If you type SPC in READY u will get the below mentioned details with whioch u can calculate the space

==========> OPTIMUM BLOCK SIZE AND DASD SPACE CALCULATOR <========

ENTER - 'END', 'HELP', OR ENTER NEW PARMS - USE COMMAS FOR NULL STRINGS
__________________________________________________________________
IF YOU DO NOT ENTER ANY DATA BUT SIMPLY PRESS (CR), THEN YOU
WILL RECEIVE A CALCULATION BASED ON THE 'DEFAULTS' WHICH ARE

RECORD-COUNT LRECL RECFM UNIT(SYSDA OR CART) DSORG
1000 80 FB SYSDA PS
__________________________________________________________________
(THE FOLLOWING 2 EXAMPLES WOULD GIVE YOU THE SAME RESULT.)

FOR EXAMPLE ,120,,CART AND 1000,120,FB,CART
WOULD CHANGE LRECL TO 120 AND UNIT TO CART
______________
RECORD-COUNT LRECL RECFM UNIT(SYSDA OR CART) DSORG
1000 120 FB CART PS
__________________________________________________________________

Try this and let me know if you still have som,e probs......
