Hi,

As far as I know, Catalog contains the information (Record length, dataset type, directory blocks etc..) about the datasets.
Master catalog is the one that gives information about System datasets.
User catalog is the one that gives information about user created datasets.

Please let me know if there is any correction. icon_question.gif

Regards,
Ramya

Hi,

The master catalog contains data sets that do not have an alias defined and a user catalog contains data sets that are aliased from the master catalog.

The master catalog is where the system alias' are defined relating to the user catalogs. There can be only one master catalog and many user catalogs on the system.

Thanks & Regards,
Priya.

hi

thr are two types of catalogs.

1) Master catalog 2) User catalog

An MVS system has only one master catalog. But many no. of user
catalogs.

Master catalog contains master datasets that is datasets used by OS.
User catalog contains user datasets that is infn abt vsam and non-vsam datasets.
bye
