Dear Folks,
Don't mistake me, if I am wrong...
In our site we have syncsort and we are using it for all our sorting purposes. I feel all the facilities svailable in DFsort is also there in Syncsort.. Then why we need that? Can you give me brief comparison between SyncSort and DFsort. I feel it may useful for jobseekers also! |

Not true. DFSORT has significant functions that are NOT available in Syncsort (e.g. IFTHEN, OVERLAY, UFF, SFF, DCn, DEn, TCn, TEn, COUNT+n, COUNT-n, larger numbers and constants, etc). In the past, DFSORT has added important features that Syncsort did not "copy" for years, if at all. DFSORT's documentation is available online. Syncsort's isn't. DFSORT's ICETOOL is a fully documented, fully supported feature of DFSORT (has been since 1991). Syncsort's SYNCTOOL is undocumented, unsupported code in Syncsort, and only has a subset of the functions available with DFSORT's ICETOOL. I could go on, but ...
If you, or anyone else, on this list would like some documents prepared by the DFSORT Team that discuss what we see as the advantages of DFSORT over Syncsort, as well as considerations for migrating from Syncsort to DFSORT, send me a note offline (yaeger@us.ibm.com). Please put "DFSORT" somewhere in your Subject line to catch my attention. |

I'm a DFSORT developer, not a salesman, so I don't get involved in pricing. But I do know that the price for the two products can vary depending on various factors, and I have heard that Syncsort's price went up considerably for their z/OS product - DFSORT's price did not, and some customers decided to switch to DFSORT at that point based on costs and other factors. But you'd have to get an actual quote from each vendor to compare the real prices of the two products for your shop.

If you are new to DFSORT we would suggest you, go through "DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will teach you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access "DFSORT: Getting Started" and all of the other DFSORT books and papers online from:
www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/software/sort/mvs/srtmpub.html
All of these books and papers contain many good examples for DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, as does the DFSORT website at:
http://www.ibm.com/storage/dfsort/ |
