Well, George it would be nice if we knew what the requirements were? He can go after a specific child segment with an unqualified SSA for that segment type - he can go after all segments types under that parent. The chart he drew looks very much like a DB2 relational structure - which IMS is NOT. Without the requirements, we do not have a clue.............and I refer to your STICKY! http://ibmmainframes.com/viewtopic.php?t=26538

Apologies for not providing correct structure of IMS data base..I am unable to draw picture... Here is the structure..
MASTER Segment has 2 child segments CHILD1 and CHILD2 (Actually more than 2)
Each CHILD1 and CHILD2 has many childs GRCHILDx
Need count of GRCHILDx s
MASTER --> CHILD1 ---> GRCHILD1
----> GRCHILD2
CHILD2 ---> GRCHILD1
----> GRCHILD2

What are the segment names of CHILD1 and CHILD2? Are they twins? What about the the segment types at the 3rd level? Do you have access to the DBD? Are you looking for a count beneath each root - each child? WHY?
