| for reasons I wont go into here, I need to uncatalog a PDS, rename it and recatalog it. SMS will not allow me to do this. Is there a way this can be done ? |

| Why uncatalog, can't you just rename it? Or just define a new one, copy the contents of the old one and delete the old one. |

Use Craq's prior solution. |

What might the uncatalog/recatalog provide? Some sort of warm&fuzzy for the clueless?
If that is too close to "for reasons I wont go into here", please ignore |

it would be better to confess the sin to SMS...
to see if it will make an exception just one time just for the TS ( Thread Starter ) |

I didn't want to go into details because it will bore all to tears. Here's the Reader's Digest version.
1) We're migrating our data center and hence will be copying our data to an new EMC frame in the new dc. The total amount of storage we have here will be the total we have there.
2) We could use more larger capacity volumes. I'm taking this opportunity to eliminate 3380s and cutting down on the amount of mod3s assigned. this space will be re-allocated to mod27s and mod9s.
3) I have a linklib allocated to a CICS region which comes down daily for 15 mins @ 3:15 AM on one of these volumes I need to consolidate (EMC has given me a range of devices that would give us the biggest bang for the buck). Sidebar here; EMC cannot replicate 3 mod3s to a single mod9.
4) I like my sleep. Didnt want to get up @ 3AM to do this move while CICS was down. In the good old days, I would've created an uncataloged linklib with the same name, copied all the modules to it, uncataloged the original and cataloged the new one. Waited for CICS to come down and back up and viola.... the old volume will be unallocated and I could just offline and inti it... problem solved.
5) I guess I have to wake up @ 3AM |

| Wasn't there a thread about just migrating it back and letting the CICS force a recall to the correct larger volume? |

| Maybe but it's kind of silly to migrate a dataset and recalling it as I have to do it in 15 mins. My best choice now is to use DFDSS and move it where I want while CICS is down. |

I was just thinking of an operator initiated command or auto-initiated batch JCL job once the CICS came down.....Should be fairly common procedure, no? |

Just wondering about your problem, someway back in the dark and distant past I seem to recall a similar type of thing.
1) Build your clone library as a new name
2) Uncatalog the clone library
3) Rename the clone library using IEHPROGM - not IDCAMS
4) Uncatalog the original library
5) Catalog the cloned and renamed library
Please send a cheque if it works, and if it doesn't Well, you shouldn't do everything that strangers tell you to do. |
